This or the Onkyo rz30 adorama for $799?
I've been wanting to upgrade my Yamaha rx-a870.
Onkyo is coming up $850 for me. Am I missing something? I think I may go for it but just hoping I can save a few more bucks https://www.adorama.com/ontxrz30bmdc.html

I'd rather get the RZ30 for Dirac Live and the possibility of DLBC. The 2800 is a lame duck as the 2850 should be out in the US soon (was announced Sep of this year).

Thanks, I did pull the trigger on the rz30 this morning.

Trying my best to hold out for the Denon 3800H around $1,100 new.. but it's just not happening for BF. Would consider the 2800H, but it seems like people here think the Onkyo RZ30 is a better buy at a cheaper price.
Any thoughts on the Denon 3800H vs Onkyo RZ30? Is the Denon really worth $400-500 more?

Many people have blasted the 3800 for being expensive compared to its counterparts from Onkyo, Integra, etc. I will say it has quality components and the DSP is strong enough to handle all the way to Dirac ART (while PAC AVRs currently experience the ART "blackout"). You pay what you can afford and 4 SW pre-outs never hurts for future-proofing.
A word of warning: many on AVS who have adopted ART have gone on to say they need to get more SWs, better speakers, etc. because the processing is that good! The 3800/ART combo is probably the best value you can get in home theater right now short of buying uber expensive StormAudio or Trinnov products.
The RZ30 is a SD darling because it's cheap and has DL. Always pay the most that you are willing to pay and no more!

It did happen this year, a couple weeks ago at Denon for $1189.

Awesome. Sounds like it's worth it for me to continue waiting then.
And yeah, I agree with drawing a line in the sand when it comes to pricing. While BF is certainly the biggest and most popular shopping season of the year.. Everybody on Slickdeals knows that great deals can be found all year long. As long its something you "want" vs something you "need".. being price conscious is the best way to shop without ending up with regret of paying too much or buying something that might be missing features.

There is a reason why I said "around $1,100 new". Plenty of people were convinced in that thread that the price would go lower than $1,189. Some people were even targeting $1,000. Considering the 4800H did show up $1,499 (sold out in a couple hours).. and the 6800H showed up for $2,299. I think they are right, it gets cheaper than $1,189 if you are patient.
As crazy as it sounds to keep waiting to save another $89.. that's exactly what I did with the Klipsch RP 5.0 complete set, and sure enough, the price dropped another $200 ($1,699 to $1,499) on actual BF. Waiting in that case saved me $200. Im also aware of Electronics Expo selling open box 3800 units for $1,100 "open box" pretty much all year round.
So while I would certainly prefer new for $1,100.. that $1,189 isnt low enough to get me to pull the trigger right now. Anything between $1,000 to $1,100 new, and I'd pull the trigger.

Having set this up and many others.
Owning the 3800 with ART & setting it up with 4 other systems, here is my take.
Taking brand preference out.
In short the 3800 makes sense if you realistically need 11 channels and or the extra features(ie #3 sub outs, independent preamp mode, access to ART).
As great as ART is, it's really only worthwhile if all your 9-11 speakers are reference quality.
Think about it $400 extra for 3800($1100)+now $800 for ART + $100 mic = $2k to get ART!
You add DLBC(now $300) to the RZ30($750)=$1050!
Good luck hearing almost a $1k difference(much imo).
The thing that throws a wrench into all this is A1EVO for Denon/Marantz owners.
It basically provides Dirac Live & Bass Control performance for free!Total game changer!!!

All great points.. thanks for sharing. I'll be honest.. ART & A1EVO are things I've only mildly considered, but have heard great things about and Im now interesting in using/hearing. I appreciate you explaining more about what they do. I just bought the Klipsch RP8000ii 5.0 surround set from Adorama (actually gets delivered today). Will eventually pull the trigger on second set of RP600ii monitors for my rear surrounds & the 2x RP1400 subs. And I want to eventually add Atmos front "height" speakers. Thats over $3,000 in new "reference" quality speakers that deserve a high end AVR with the ability to run 7.2.2 surround.
I'm replacing a 12-year-old Yamaha AVR that I got from Costco that are pushing budget friendly Andrew Jones Pioneer speakers with dual Daytona 12" subs running 7.2 surround. So all of this is kinda new.. but also kinda not.. as this entire purpose of this new system is to be a significant step up all around. There are so many new tech buzzwords with these latest generation AVR's that Im having a hard time keeping up. Dirac Live Room Control + Bass Control + ART sounds like the best possible combination of tuning software, but a minimum of another $800 for the entire package?? Meanwhile A1EVO is free and seems to do 2/3rds of what $800 combo would do. So in my mind why immediately spend another $800 for the entire Dirac package.. when A1EVO comes free with the Denon 3800? If anything the free A1EVO is yet another strong reason to just buy the 3800.
My other concern with something like the Onkyo RZ30 is quality. Denon (and Marantz) has always seemed step up beyond everybody for the overall typical HT AVR experience. For example over a decade now I've heard so many great things about Audyssey. I've also felt the YPAO tuning on my Yamaha was weak. I also hate Yamaha remote control, GUI interface or smartphone app. And I've heard bad things about the hardware quality of Onkyo receivers (HDMI ports dying, etc).
With $3,000 in reference quality speakers.. Ideally I want to the highest quality AVR I can get for right around $1,000.
- Onkyo Z30 is only $800, does most of what I want.. but not sure I trust the brand and doesnt come with free A1EVO.
- Denon 2800 only $830 but is limited to 7.2 surround.
- Denon 3800 cost more than $1,000 but can handle 9.4 surround and is future proofed if decide to go DL RC+BC+ART in the future.
I just need to find the 3800 at a price point closer to that $1,000 mark to pull the trigger. Might be time to consider the refurbished 3800 from Electronics Expo.
