Compressor is MUCH more efficient but is larger and produces some noise (think of your fridge turning on/off). Peltier is wildly inefficient but can be very small and very quiet (some have a fan to cool off the hot side).

It *kinda* depends on your situation, in this case compressor.

I use a cheap 24-hour digital thermometer from Menards that tells me the highest and lowest temp over the previous 24 hours to ensure safety with raw meats. Usually the cooler keeps things a little colder than the set temperature, and it's never more than 2-3 degree variation over a day.
I've paired it with a portable battery "generator" (mine is an off-brand, but it's like a Jackery or EcoFlow), and it works great plugged into the 12 V outlet from that device. My BougeRV can run in freezer mode for more than a day, even on a hot South Dakota summer day, outdoors on a single charge with my generator / battery. If I leave the car, I snake the cord out of the trunk from the battery and put the cooler outside next to the car in its shade, then plug it in. I guess someone could mess with the cooler or the food, but I've never run into that problem at national or state parks.
I've also used it occasionally when we overbuy groceries and can't fit them in the refrigerator or freezer at home, and it works just fine indoors on 120V with the adapter for many weeks in a row as a secondary refrigerator / freezer.
