Is there a really good air purifier where I don't have to keep buying new filters?

Who needs an air filter when you can bury your face in that fluffy tummy? 😺

That's the dumbest thing I ever read. If you don't want filters it's called a fan.
Are you serious? They sell purifiers where you wash the filter.

I have to imagine that what gets washed is almost a pre filter for larger things, hairs, large dust particles and that there's then the finer filtration media that needs to be periodically replaced. But that's just what I figure would be the case

There are no adequate washable filters that don't end up becoming clogged to the point of not being readily cleanable back to the point of allowing full airflow, unless all you mean is a pre-filter in a multi-stage unit. Equally, washable pre-filters can be a mold issue in high humidity environments if they're not dried fully.

For example, with furnace filters, you either get something that claims MERV 8 but is really MERV 1-4 at best, or you get something that manages to trap particulate... and manages to keep it trapped to a point where basic washing isn't going to help much. There's not really a middle ground, and you can't just add a higher grade filter behind the electrostatic one without overly compromising airflow.

If you buy an air filter, you're going to be buying filter media, especially if you want HEPA level filtration. At best you buy an air filter that has cheap off-brand media available: the less proprietary and/or weirdly shaped usually the cheaper.

It DOES help to buy air filters that are built properly around expecting multiple layers of different filter media, as it tends to help with the longevity of the higher grade primary filter media (e.g. the HEPA filter in HEPA grade units).

You could build something like a Corsi-Rosenthal using furnace filters and a box fan or blower and save some money that way, but it won't be as quiet as an energy star air filter meant for residential use, and eventually you'll still need to replace the filters. Multiple large surface area filters will, of course, go MUCH longer before needing replacing... but you'll also need to find someplace to PUT something like a Corsi-Rosenthal.
