I have 3 of the black Indio Retro's (telecaster copies) with the maple necks and maple fretboards and all 3 necks & fretboards wood are absolutely perfect and beautiful and made with very very high quality maple. The graining is dense and stunning. The maple is sourced from Canada from what I eventually found out. Can't say enough good things about these guitars. They are my favorites in a collection of 13 other electrics I own (89' les paul included).

Great guitar for the money, but be aware they are CHUNKY. I ended up sending mine back from a slickdeal a while ago because it was on the site as a 2 pt bridge and I had a sweet bridge to swap in that I bought it for, but it showed up as a 6 pt (looks like the pics are correctly showing 6 pt bridges now), and it was like TWELVE pounds (vs. average eight lbs for a fender). That is heavier than a lot of the pre weight relief LPs

. I think ash is the tree equivalent of lead.

But yeah, i agree, very well made guitar with nice woods. I would have swapped out the p/u's and the hardware, but it is a fantastic base for a hi value build. Just be aware that these are heavy mf'ers.

Much better off with a Squier Debut or Sonic. These Monoprice's are junk with no meaningful warranty and no guarantee any parts are compatible with Fender/Squier parts.

I have a couple of these that I used as a base where I strip it, smooth out the neck, then swap hardware (new bridge, tuners, nut, jack, etc.) and install loaded pickguards (from Fender). The pick guards don't fit OOTB, but with a bit of trimming where the pickguard meets the neck, and a few new holes because they all don't line up, they fit fine and you wouldn't know the difference. Depending on the trem block, if you want to float the bridge and have full range of motion, you have to remove a bit of material so the trem has full motion... or just get a shaved/thin block and you are fine. The bridges bolt right on, etc. once I have it all put together with string tension, then I work the frets, etc. so that they are leveled to support buzz free low action, and they play great!

Most of the parts I either have from previous projects, pick up cheap on marketplace, or the occasional slickdeal (mainly on loaded pick guards, don't see deals often on other parts, if ever that I can remember), so the price is still usually cheaper than picking up a fender player or similar. That doesn't really matter though, I do it for enjoyment.

That said, I usually setup these guitars (I probably have five Indios from previous crazy cheap slick deals, like around 40-50 a piece), and for that money under normal circumstances I don't know how you can do anywhere close to the same hardware for the money. The pickups aren't my favorite, but they are OK, especially for a beginner/learner, and the hardware functions fine. They usually only need minimal fretwork if someone is picky.
