But i think it's the only A24 film I couldn't even tolerate.
I respect the artistic endeavour and the stylistic elements, but man, the writing and the characters were just mind-numbingly dumb and not believable.
hmm seems dead? seeing $23.44 after coupon. decent deal for this amazon exclusive though!
I didn't think the protagonists were dumb, I think they'd seem some real shit and it changed them. They felt defeated and were only continuing because it's all they knew how to do.
The antagonists were not dumb they fell so deep into cult worship that they could do unimaginable things.
I think most people in the US know someone close to them who falls into one of these groups as a result of politics and so it resonates to daily life in an imaginative way. A lot of futuristic stories are like this, Terminator, Running Man, Independence Day.

I hear you, and thanks for the insight here.
But are we to expect that the characters have no individual agency?
The entire plot of decisions they make is just so bafflingly absurd, then the final scene is even moreso completely unrealistic.
It's like the creators spent all their efforts to convince the audience that this is the new normal and that chaos defines life, but the characters' decisions and speech just made zero sense. At least in Terminator, Running Man, Independence Day the people are generally believable and they react as the general public would.
I understand the world-building element but the main characters were just such simpletons, it completely threw things off
