I don't think this game has been a penny under $30 for PC, ever.
Xbox always had a good discount.

The holdup is it's still selling a lot of copies, so why would they just give up on the revenue to give it away for free.
COD is making a lot more money and yet it's on Game Pass. I seriously doubt that's the holdup.

COD relies on microtransactions for the majority of its revenue. It makes sense to get it in the hands of as many people as possible, even for free. Sekiro is a single player game, with no online feature and no microtransactions, that only earns revenue from copies sold.

But there are plenty of new single player games on Game Pass as well, so again, I don't think your point really holds up. Indiana Jones, Avowed, Starfield, just to name a few that are single player and available on Game Pass - all day one releases as well.

Sekiro was released close to seven years ago. Sure it's still making some money but that is not the reason it's not on Game Pass.

Actually googling it and it seems like it's because the publishing agreement with Activision did not include streaming or subscription rights. So there is no guarantee it will come to Game Pass, even though it was published by a Microsoft company. Too bad.

I'm going to be pedantic about this because I'm waiting for the game to get closer to $20 but right now it's $29.99 on Steam (historic low)

It needs to go lower, considering its age
None of the Dark Souls games ever dip below their stale sale prices either. Makes me doubtful they'll ever budge.

Lowest ever was 26.99 4 years ago from gamesplanet.us a french company selling US Steam keys.

Right, you just circled back to what I was saying. Old agreements can be amended and new agreements drafted, but there's no reason for FromSoft to do that as long as the game is still generating significant royalties for them for each copy sold. The only time it would make sense to do so is if the game stopped selling - then just sell subscription rights for a bulk sum. But right now, people are still buying it.

What other games are doing is irrelevant, they likely have completely different arrangements.

Agree to disagree. Not every game is on Game Pass. This game was published by Activision (owned by Microsoft) but From made it. No other From game is on Game Pass, as far as I know. And Dark Souls is not making a lot of money right now. So no, it's not about that. From just has not done Game Pass deals. Maybe one day. But LOL at the suggestion that this seven year old game is a cash cow.

I'm not sure what we're disagreeing on, I think we're saying the same thing. From obviously prefers ongoing royalties on individual game sales vs whatever someone would pay them as a lump sum for subscription rights. Either the payout for the subscription rights would be so small that it's not even worth it, or they're still making good money on individual game copies.

You'd be surprised how many people get hooked by the new FromSoft games as they come out (e.g Elden Ring), and then go back and play all the older ones too. That's what happened to me anyway - started with Sekiro, then got DS1-3, Bloodborne, Demons Souls. I see tons of people on the forums coming from ER and wanting to play the older ones. Is it a cash cow - likely not, but it's an ongoing revenue stream that gets a significant bump every time they put out a new game and new players get introduced to their formula.

Microsoft would surely pay more than what Sekiro is making. From has just opted not to go that route, for whatever reason. Microsoft has paid a ton for some third party deals on Game Pass - Lies of P, Expedition 33, etc.

It's most likely licensing. MS (through Activision) may publish the game, but they can't include it in GP without compensating the developer, so a new agreement has to be made. After all, the developer still expects royalty checks.

If that was the main issue, MS would've just made CoD entirely F2P. Instead, MS has put plenty of micro-transaction free (or non-dependent) games on Game Pass.
The likely issue is that despite MS (through Activision) is the publisher, they still owe royalty to the developer AND their agreement probably doesn't encompass releasing it on Game Pass or the cost to MS might be prohibitive. So a negotiation of the contract may be necessary, and payments made. The game is old, and may not be worth much to MS to put it on GP as it's not a big enough draw. It's why MS makes a lot of their own content, and acquired all those studios. Content production is a lot cheaper than licensing content for GP.

Is sekiro better in terms of story than Elden Ring or the typical souls game? I think I could enjoy the gameplay loop but I really struggle when there's no narrative pushing me forward
