apparently its digital readout end gets toasty hot too.
Never noticed it being too hot to touch. Of course, any charger or cable pushing max power will heat up. The SSD in your PC gets burning hot during use...it's the nature of inefficient electronics. But charging my laptops at 65W, it does not get hot at all.
this charges slower btw due to the added resistance. There is no way around this because the charger won't increase its communicated voltage to account for the resistance. This can be quite useful though if you are trying to figure out if your charger is legit and you don't mind 1-2 minute slower charging from 0 to 100
Very important point. I have one of these; Sabrent doesn't actually make these, they just rebrand them. I would not recommend charging anything at 100w for long. It seems fine for sustained charging up to around 65w, but 100w will eventually heat the display end of the cable to dangerously hot levels. I charged a 100Wh power bank with this, and almost burnt myself when I unplugged the power bank.
I now only use this cable to charge phones, tablets and handheld PCs with max charge rates of 45w or 65w.
I doubt this would cause a fire, but I can definitely see why these would have high failure rates when it gets hot enough to weaken or melt solder. So avoid actually using this for 100w, for extended periods of time!
I was wrong. I thought this was my cable but after reading this, I saw mine is the SOOPII cable.

I personally like the SOOPII brand on Amazon. Cables are nice and flexible and out of over a dozen I've bought, never had one fail and I use them A LOT!
Currently $6.50 on Amazon for the 4ft. https://a.co/d/fgVaTta
Better than $10 for sure, making this Sabrent not so great of a deal!

And yes, it gets hot to the touch. I can't remember what I was charging, but I went to unplug it and it felt so hot it triggered the reflex to immediately drop it like a hot pan handle.
I don't routinely charge my phone with it, but with a USB A to USB C slower charge rate overnight.
When I want a quick charge, I use this cable then disconnect it immediately after.
I would rather have this adapter. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CKRQCL1T
When you want to know power use it's nice to be able to disconnect easily and continue using the cable without LED.

Let's be clear...it could only get that hot when it's pushing maximum watts (which any device will get hot pushing high wattage power). I use these ALL THE TIME (I have about 10 of them scattered between house, office and my IT shop) but they never get hot like a "hot pan handle" when charging 65W or less laptops (lots), or my iPad or my iPhone or Android phones. Personally, I've never had one so hot that I had a reflex reaction, either, even at around 100W (mine never reach 100W, but around 97W max). Maybe you have a bad SOOPII cable?

I'd either have to disagree with you or agree that my cable is bad. The charger I was using with the cable is this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B3HW6MPD which is a max 65W charger.
