For $50 more I got the WD Gold 22TB drives. If you apply the 20% Paypal Pay Later deal. Not great but everything is super expensive these days...

Yeah My NAS drives are 10 years old. HGST NAS, which have the vibration technology so they are roughly equivalent to WD Red Pro. I got 2 6TB drives in 2015 for $500. I am really looking for triple the size for the same price, which would be 18TB at 250 each but its just not happening. 22TB would be nice too, but man shelling out $600 for harddrives is a big pill to swallow. I might just wait another year or next summer to see what prime day offers then if the market changes.

Last I heard, enterprise hard drives are backordered 2 years. Things may not be any better next year. If you feel like gambling, the big Seagate Barracudas (which are also found in the larger Expansion models) are quite cheap and based on an enterprise design. They're also HAMR, so we don't really know how well they'll hold up long term.

I just got the 22tb external seagate for $230 a few weeks ago to use as an external. People were saying its a binned exos based on the idea that seagate doesnt sell a 22tb baracuda. I hope its an exos, regardless I hope it isnt HAMR. My old 8tb external drive died, it was also 10 years old, an "archive" seagate. But for now I have my data on 2 of the HGSTs in raid 1 and on the external seagate.

That would be a good option for those that got the paypal offer. I didn't get the offer, maybe because my PayPal is a business account? I ended up grabbing two 18tb red pro's using the capital one shopping app and got 24% back in rewards, which brings them to $228 each after the rewards, or $12.66 per TB, which is extremely good IMO.

Seagate may not sell a bare 22TB Barracuda but they're definitely putting them in their externals. There have been plenty of reports of that. I think some people are reading way too much into the names they put on the stickers. Many are making lots of assumptions without much/any evidence to back them up.

It's very likely that any 20TB Expansion purchased in the last few months contains a Barracuda branded drive. It's easy enough to check. Any utility that can pull the model number of the drive will give you what you need. If it has "NM" in the middle of the model number, it's an Exos. If it has "DM" in the middle, it's a Barracuda. These Barracudas will definitely be HAMR drives.
