I'd spend the additional $70 to get the Instinct 3 Solar.

It's surprising to me because at this same point in its product cycle the Instinct 1 Solar was selling for $99. and the non solar was selling for $70. From that frame of reference $230 is not a slick deal; in fact, it's rather bad. Sure one can argue that this has better hardware and software but it really needs to drop about another $70 before it can be called slick.

In a couple of months one should be able to get a refurbished Forerunner 570 for $300 so if one can wait that's the best approach. If not, I agree that the Instinct 3 is the better watch at $300 than the 2 at $230.

How would one compare this to a Vivoactive 6 from a purely fitness tracking perspective? The screen or solar are not features I'm interested in. Just looking to track workouts and sleep data and with the discount, is this worth considering as its now in the price range?

Garmin instinct 3 solar is 299 at best buy. 28 days one charge. I am pleased coming from instinct 1

Instinct hands down.
Dumbed down BW display of Instinct makes all the difference in battery life.

Good price. I have the 2S solar (smaller version). I don't have the higher battery drain options enabled but I don't have everything disabled and my battery life is typically 3 weeks no activities to 1 week tracking activities a couple hours a day, 6 times a week. The solar really doesn't do much unless its a sunny day and you're outside a lot of the day.
