1. To enable the emergency light function, the light needs to be plugged into a powered outlet and the switch needs to be left in the ON position. If the power goes out, the light will turn on automatically. The light will not automatically turn on if the switch is in the OFF position.
2. The built-in battery is a 1 AAA Energizer NiMH 1.2V dc according to a seller response in the Q&A, which explains why it's not the brightest or longest running light. However, li-ion batteries are not meant to be plugged in all the time, so that's why they use an NiMH cell (although an AA would provide more power).

Still, I'm giving them a try. If nothing else, can serve as light where they're plugged in when the power goes out until I can get my other flash lights, lanterns, etc up and running.
