I have this device and it's a great starter NAS. NO, you don't need four drives. Yes, it makes your life a lot easier if you have all the drives you'd like to use to start.

I started with 2 4TB drives and quickly found out that it works best with 4, and that's a 24+ hour transfer.

So i'd recommend TWO drives of a huge capacity and going raid 1 (meaning one drive is redundant), or getting 4 drives of equal capacity and going raid 5. That's what I'm at and now I'm wishing I had done bigger than 4 4TB drives, but that's a good 10ish TB of usable space.

UGREEN has a great os and app, and that's huge. It backs up all my phone photos and serves as a Plex server. I've used about 5TB so far

As far as I know, yes it does unless you want to limit your storage to the lowest capacity drive. I.e. this doesn't have the SHR method on synology that lets you mix and match capacity

Pretty weak rock chip cpu here. Won't run well with things like docker, but should be fine for basic backup. Synology also gives much more flexibility with mismatched drive sizes

i didn't read into the details of this particular , but knowing how RAID works, you won't really get the full capacity of your highest capacity hard drive if you have several drives that are smaller than it. also all drives vary in speed and performance, so you want to get drives that are the same, if not very similar.

You shouldn't use different-sized drives in a NAS primarily because
it leads to wasted space and potential performance bottlenecks. In a traditional RAID configuration, the usable capacity is limited to the size of the smallest drive, making the extra space on larger drives unusable. Additionally, the entire array will operate at the speed of the slowest drive, creating a performance bottleneck that negates the benefits of having faster drives

Normal price $347, you are saving $7. This is not a slick deal, this is fake BF rebate

Building a NAS and running OMV was cheaper than this. I just need something to backup my current NAS. A 28TB external is $280 right now. Hrmmmmm decisions decisions.

eh, not really. Not sure where you're getting your info from to say it's normally $347. I'm using a price tracker program and this is technically the lowest it's been since being listed on Amazon.

In July of this year, this was listed at $429.99 with a drop to $386.99 in August.

There have been two lightning deals for a brand new on September 10 and again on September 30th for $364.98 each time.

Then the price shot back up to $429.99 and it's been like that since October 12th until now, on sale at $339.99 for brand new.
