Can anyone comment on this router compared to the Asus triband that's $190? I know the Flint 3 has a weaker chip than the 2, but it sounds like that mainly results in slower VPN connections? I may be mistaken in that.

Other downsides compared to Flint 2 are that the 3 is not supported by generic OpenWrt, while the 2 is. Also the 3 is 4x2, while the 2 is 4x4.

I was also interested between this router and Asus RT-BE92U and the AI tool says that the weak CPU in Flint 3 will limit VPN performance.

Here is the summary from AI -
The GL.iNet Flint 3 is designed for simplicity with built-in VPN functionality, while the ASUS RT-BE92U offers high performance and flexibility, making it suitable for users who want more control over their network settings. Each router has its strengths, so the choice depends on whether you prioritize ease of use or advanced features.

My previous experience with Asus Routers (since AC68U) has been solid. Also AsusWRT (with excellent support of Merlin AsusWRT) will allow longer support.

The Asus RT-BE92U has had a troubled history. The firmware has been terrible ever since release according to Amazon reviews and what people are saying on Reddit. There was a recent firmware release within the last week that seems to help the router run better, though.

The Asus RT-BE92U can also run Merlin firmware which some folks on Reddit say makes the router work better. So if you buy the Asus RT-BE92U be sure you test it right away and try different firmware if necessary. If it still performs poorly, return it and get something else!

Like with all my previous Asus routers, the first thing I did was installed Merlin. Running for nearly 2 weeks and no issues so far. Got like new from Amazon warehouse

Fantastic! So you can immediately install Merlin and then go through the setup (connect to your cable modem/ONT [fiber], go through the installation process)??? No need to setup w/Asus firmware first and then install Merlin?

It's fantastic to hear this router (which was hobbled with quirky Asus firmware) can perform so well using Merlin firmware.

Correct. You login to the router and before doing any other setup just go update the firmware to Merlin. Note - you can download the merlin firmware for your specific router ahead of time.

I'd take this router over Asus RT-BE92U -- reviews are really horrible for ASUS. Does Merlin fixes it?

Features on the Flint 3 are great if you want to do some advanced networking. Unfortunately utilizing many of those features are not very simple for the average user, such as setting up additional VLANs and SSIDs. It takes more work and know-how than a few clicks in a GUI.
Also, not sure if I have bad luck with the hardware, or I have a bad firmware version (I did a firmware update a couple months ago) but my Flint 3 constantly drops connection. I'm not home often, so I haven't been able to troubleshoot, but I can say if I'm doing something on my phone I'll drop connection about every 5 minutes. It rarely lasts more than 15 seconds, but it's annoying af.
Overall I think I'll really appreciate this router, but I need to work through some headaches to get there.
