I've never had this style of bungee last. They just dry rot and fall apart. The black rubber ones with the S hooks, on the other hand, I've had for decades without degradation

I have had those crumble on me in the past and have been hesitant about everything bungee related. That said, the random rubber S-hook one I found lying around the garage has been a trooper, 5 years in the Southern California desert sun holding my gate shut and it shows no sign of giving up. I blew through the first bungee (the OP style) in a year or so.
