If you have a switch 2, borrow a switch 1 version (library/friend) and play for 20 min through the intro to get to the menu screen. From there, you can upgrade to the switch 2 version for a discount for $10 or $15 for deluxe. Full digital game

No, once you buy the $10 digital version, it's yours. No cartridge needed. I got the Switch 1 cartridge from the library and did the digital upgrade for my Switch 2, then my wife's Switch 2, and then my friend borrowed it and did it with his Switch 2 as well.

My kid was begging to buy Hogwarts Legacy at Walmart for $50 this weekend. I told him to wait and see if there will be a sale between now and Christmas. Glad I stuck to my guns! Thanks OP!

Glad it worked out! I might actually buy it as well. I need to look into it but I think that if you have a switch 2 they make an upgrade pack for $10-15 for better speed and graphics. I hadn't been too interested in the game but for $25-30 total it might warrant my attention

You don't need to have the original switch cartridge in every time you play the upgraded version? Like you do with say PS4 to PS5 upgrades?

Apparently my library doesn't have the switch version but is getting the switch 2 version. Guess that means I'm out of luck (or rather, $15 more)

Not that I know of. Most other games require the cartridge. The difference with Hogwarts Legacy is that the upgrade offer is tied to your WB account, not the game like it is with most/all similar upgrades. It's actually not an "upgrade pack" - it's the full digital Switch 2 version of the game. WB probably decided that it was easier and cheaper to just resell the whole game than it was to try to come up with upgraded texture packs.
