For current users - not a new user. I've searched for hacks and couldn't find anything.

Like others, you can't be a prior member of Kindle Unlimited to get this deal. Just tried doing the app and signing up that was but it's the same 11.99/month price.
I wish there was an easier way to do a 6-12 annual pricing without doing the "gift of a membership." thing.

After much consult with customer service it turns out the trick is to buy the gift subscription, let your kindle subscription end, THEN use the gift subscription link. For whatever reason, at least 2 years ago, you can no longer just extend your subscription with a gift one.
The only thing you lose is any borrowed books, not ones you have purchased.
Hoping it works like that again because as much as I love my kindle stuff (constantly borrowing scifi books), I'm not paying $12 a month.
