pretty sure this used to be for the whole quarter.
They added an additional category this year which is in addition to the ones for the quarter. This applies to the last month of the quarter only. Chase wants to keep us on our toes.

I've had my Chase Freedom forever and I remember at least for the last 5-6 years, there was at least 1 full quarter with PayPal. I remember this because I make a lot of purchases on eBay and use PayPal for the extra 5% CB. This is the first time I've seen it only for 1 month vs the entire quarter.

Yeah, it sucks. A lot of banks are nerfing their cards. It's also likely to get worse now that Visa/MC have finalized the proposed settlement agreement with merchants regarding fees, etc. They are going to allow merchants to accept/reject cards based on category (commercial, premium consumer and standard consumer). It looks like most or all of the reward cards are "premium" and will carry a higher interchange rate. I think that makes it likely, at the very least, that many small businesses will stop accepting them or impose the additional surcharges (up to 3%) that the agreement provides for. Beyond that, who knows. I don't think it bodes well for the consumer though.
