Note that many phones can act as basic travel routers now.

For Samsung: Mobile hotspot -> click on your network name -> click "advanced" -> enable "wi-fi sharing"

You only have to enable that setting once. Once it is enabled, you can connect to a wifi upstream for Internet access and enable hotspot to create a downstream network for all your other devices. All your devices can now join your own wifi network and access the Internet through your phone's wifi, just like a travel router. You'll only have to pay the single per-device fee.

Many cruise lines charge you per device to use the internet. These routers can connect as one device but you can connect as many to the router as you want. (But can't leave the room.) They don't allow Starlink on the boats either. (Yes, this is highway robbery.)

Which makes this policy even more stupid. If they truly confiscate these devices then it may be best just to reuse or invest in an older model Samsung phone just to use as a mobile hotspot as you stated.

Can you use this to remove an Airbnb router and use this instead for your own network? I know you can connect this to the existing Airbnb router and have your own network but wondering if this can be used as a stand alone router?
Yes it can be stand alone or a repeater

In for one, I have a business trip in February so this will be nice to set up in advance so I don't have to reregister multiple devices to whatever hotel wifi that's available.

Really good deal if this is the international version. The mainland China version had a few features gutted like VPN and AdGuard.

I wonder if you can flash a non-china firmware to the mainland china version to get VPN clients back.
EDIT: According to this reddit post you can in fact switch to global firmware for a china device: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetw...n/k4mfjsg/

I've never bought from aliexpress before. For those who had ordered from them, is it safe?

Apparently a bunch of cruise lines explicitly ban these and will remove them from your luggage if they find it.
Travel NCL 30-60 nights per year. Never had any issues. Policies change with each sailing, but for the past three years, no concerns. We've used it openly in some areas. Most have no clue what it is. "Signal booster" is plan prepared response.

Google Pixel phones can do this as well. Great feature!

Such a great device. I think I paid $80 for mine, so this is a nice deal. WiFi 6 is certainly good enough for most situations when you're traveling I would think.
