Yes, the Ring Alarm Contact Sensor requires a Ring Protect subscription to get instant mobile alerts when doors and windows open.
The sensors themselves work with the Ring Alarm Base Station, but the notification features that alert you to activity require an active Ring Protect subscription, which is sold separately.
It works without a subscription. I have these connected to home assistant.
You do need to buy a z-wave usb stick to connect the sensor to home assistant.
If you have already have a ring alarm hub you can use these with home assistant without a subscription or a z-wave stick. Use ring-mqtt to setup the integration and you will get the sensors integrated into home assistant that way.
Except, of course, that Home Assistant can only be accessed remotely by using a third-party subscription, which may be more cost-effective than what Ring subscriptions ring up at. If you are at home all the time, no problem.

I mean you can pay money to support the devs and access remotely. A cool thing about HA is you don't have to do that... Run tailscale, wireguard, or a reverse proxy (NGinx for example). All add-ons you can download with HA! Just some button pushing and you have it for free, and can access it remotely.
