I'm about to head out for a year of travel with a lot of hiking and solo aspects, so this will supplement my PLB (Personal Locator Beacon).

The Garmin does require a subscription [https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/837461/] for it to even work as a basic service (will not send SOS without a subscription), but that service can be paused, IIRC.

I had this on my 3xCamel watch list for a little while and got the price drop notification this morning. I'm a SCUBA diver, so I'll also put a price watch on the dive case.

With new satellite cell connectivity options added seemingly daily the overpriced, expensive subscription-requiring inReach days are numbered. Can't wait.

Except that these are bulletproof and the battery lasts forever the only reason I'll keep it when I'm in the backcountry

Cancelled my subscription, just carry my phone and a spare battery now. Newer phones are also fairly water resistant. Dropped mine in a stream and it came out just fine no reason for this device for weekend trips anymore.

I use the spot x satellite comm device. No phone required. Exceptional battery life. I wouldn't trust my phone period. We use it for too many things where the batter does not last. I use it when I hunt, fish, and travel. Tracking is good and the predefined messages, (14 user set) are great.. so good,I pay annually and never really use the 240 messages I buy. Never use 20... Been using them since 2018. Huge Garmin product user, but I find spot better.

Go heat, nobody is forcing you to buy the inreach.
Do you know dedicated gps devices still exist?

It's a "battery" and sounds like you need to invest in a decent, modern phone first and/or emergency battery packs.

A phone should always be your first line of safety, even with this device...given this is still limited in what it can do in an emergency situation.

If you don't need a two way communicator, a PLB will be a better option. Especially if you already have a phone with satellite SOS, a PLB is a better option as a backup with no sub fees.

FWIW I just got back for a super remote Alaskan hunting trip. I am not an experienced hunter but every other member of the group had one of these. They used them as well as satellite texting. The satellite texting seemed much less reliable and didn't work for me at all.

These are still the gold standard despite subscription, but times are a changin' My battery lasts seemingly forever and the thing is bulletproof. I say if your considering it do it, in two years see if there's something better, short money for saving your life.

You are crazy. Modern phones... I have. Your experience in life must be limited. You must be young. You would be a fool to trust a phone for anything more than a day hike. Any one who really goes out into the wilderness NEVER USE A PHONE AS A FIRST LINE OF SUPPORT.

This is why these devices exist. You think a phone fully replaces everything. A phone is a jack of all trades and a master at some... not all. No modern phone has a batterylife that will suppor all at once. You are using it for gps, photo, comms... You will not make it.

So much babble for so little substance. You totally bypassed the parts about me saying having additional battery backups along with the phone being a primary source and then to go up only as needed.
Given the way you think, your experience in education must be limited.

Again... for someone who is really backpacking into the wilderness... extra weight of extra batteries and solar panels is not an option for the wise.

Do you boo! You will learn one day. If that is your workflow and it works for you great. But there is a reason for these products. People like you cannot see anything past your point of view. You are so gong ho on your method, you actually think it is the best fit. just go to hikinguy.com for another perspective

Please don't take mine... I just babble on the forums.

And your apple satellite service uses spot's satellites. Another thing is the actual rescue services that are provided. So you if you do not go to the back country and need a dedicated device great. take all of your batteries and dongles with you...
