Generally latex or memory foam. I think you can use coil if the coils are each individually pocketed but recommend researching that. I have a 14" memory foam mattress and it's a tad thick for the extreme angles of the adjustable frame but still works. I got my parents an 8" sleep on latex mattress and it works well (though latex is extremely heavy).
