Seeking advice for ways to save on big items like water heater and furnace

My water heater and furnace are both due for replacements in a year or two, so I'd like to strategize my purchase in the future. I'd love to hear what others have tried to save $. The most I can think of is to start buying discounted Lowes or HomeDepot GCs whenever good deals come around. Are there any other tricks? Please share.

Check your electric service provider's website. Many offer rebates on replacement central AC and water heaters if they meet certain efficiency criteria.
