I agree, that's the biggest problem.
Fire sticks were great in the beginning and I would upgrade to the newest one whenever possible. But while the hardware was getting better, the software went the opposite direction. It was pushing more ads and more aggressively.
I stopped upgrading and now I'm looking for a way out, anybody have any recommendations?
None of the posted coupons work for me to get the $29.99 price unfortunately; thanks anyways OP.

Basic hardware by today's standards, very locked down too
It's more than good enough for Plex or Kodi to handle 4K streaming with all the bells and whistles (Atmos, Dolby Vision, etc) via Direct Play from your NAS/Plex server. Plus, SmartTube[github.io] works great when sideloaded.
Plex, SmartTube, and tinyCam PRO[amazon.com] are the only apps I use/watch on the multiple 4k Firesticks in my home, and they function wonderfully and reliably. I would argue you'd be hard-pressed to find such functionality and features for just $30.
Too bad I don't qualify for any of the promo codes as I have a few old 4k Sticks I would like to upgrade to the Max version. Most people should be able to score a similar $30 deal, if not better, on Prime Day or Black Friday, though...
It doesn't stack for me either. It seems that the $10 off code (4KMAXNEW) overrides and cancels out the 20% trade-in discount. On the bright side, the 4KMAXNEW coupon is now working for me. However, I only get the $3 off for the old Firestick Lite trade-in and not the 20% discount.
It's disappointing because not too long ago, you could stack the 20% trade-in discount. Plus, the discount used to apply to the full retail price instead of the price after applying coupons. It seems Amazon has recently updated their policies, much to the chagrin of cheap basterds everywhere...

You should only use these devices for viewing media via free or sideloaded apps, not for accessing or paying for media in the Amazon Prime ecosystem IMO.
My holy trinity of apps includes:
TinycamPro[amazon.com]- An excellent IP security camera viewing app. It can turn your Amazon Fire Stick into a budget-friendly yet powerful NVR if needed. I used free Amazon digital credits[amazon.com] from choosing slow shipping to purchase the app.
Plex[amazon.com]- Still the best free client for streaming content from your Media NAS, in my opinion. Jellyfin[amazon.com] is a decent alternative, but Plex remains clearly superior. For streaming content over your LAN via Direct Play (no transcoding required), Plex is unbeatable.
Also, check out Plexamp[plex.tv], which lets you stream music over the internet to any compatible device from your LAN Plex Media Server for free, despite that Plex has recently adjusted its pricing tiers.
SmartTube[github.io]- The best way to watch YouTube on an Amazon Stick. Honestly, SmartTube could be the only app you need if you prefer simplicity and free media. It's a must-have app for the Firestick, in my opinion.
