I've had one of these for a year or two, and I'm pretty satisfied with it. I bought it during a Black Friday Sale, I think at the end of 2023, with a trade-in. I think I paid about $249 (with the trade-in credit).

A lot of my co-workers have Remarkables. I have played with those and didn't notice them to be [re]markedly different. I feel like I made the better purchase, since mine probably cost less than half of what theirs did.

As among the various Kindle generations, there's actually very little change between the first generation and the second (i.e., last) generation. First and foremost, it's the same processor and RAM, so they perform similarly. I think the second generation has some different texture on the glass (I think the first generation is totally fine -- it's much better than writing on a 2-in-1 laptop, for example.) Additionally, I think maybe the bezels are slightly smaller. Here's an article on it. The authors are trying to sell the newer version, but I don't think it's much to get excited about: https://www.cnet.com/tech/computi...ut-subtle/

The current generation is the third generation. I think they did improve the CPU; supposedly it has "up to 40% faster page turns." (I haven't ever noticed that my Gen 1 was "too slow.") I think the bezels are also somewhat smaller. (I'd note that while Amazon seems to be on a quest to eliminate bezels, they're not an entirely bad feature. They give you something to hold the device by.) At the same time, they did what every greedy corporation does and ensh!tified it: the "base" version, which costs $430, no longer has a backlight. (All the prior generations had a backlight.) Now you have to buy the "premium," $500 version to get one. That move really irked me, so much so that I probably won't upgrade, regardless of how much they cut the price.

Anyway, in summary, I'm not sure how good of a deal the $199 price tag is -- maybe check Camel*3. But if you're concerned about the first generation being outdated, I don't know if I'd worry too much. The difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 is pretty marginal. And while Gen 3 does have some component upgrades, they're not earthshattering. . . . and Amazon is trying to price gouge with it.

Just my two cents.

I bought one. I almost bought yesterday, it was actually a better deal at $220 new. They raised that price, probably to sell off the used stock. Fingers crossed.

Can an iPad do everything a scribe can do? I love the idea of this but don't want another electronic to carry around if I don't need to

Competitively priced to be the same with the Kobo Libra Color. However, this also includes the pen while the Kobo does not. Good deal if you are into the amazon ecosystem.
