Just recess the screw heads .75" below the surface, so they don't ever touch a tooth on the saw blade.
Just drill a couple holes and thru bolt them to the top. Recess the wood hole and done.
If you want to get fancier, you can route out a channel to drop the horse top into the 2x4 and side bolt as well.
