Discover has for Discover Cardholders: 15% Off when you Redeem Cashback Bonus for Apple Gift Cards (Physical or eCertificate). Shipping is free for physical gift cards (if available).
Thanks to community member PapperYZ for finding this deal.
Note: Discover is referring to this promotion as "15% Added Value", however it appears to actually be 15% off the face value of the cards.
I bought MacBook Air + Watch SE3 at BestBuy and used the PayPal $1250 20% cashback deal.
Apple is at MSRP if buying directly. They bundle it with their $250 Gift Card for laptops for this holiday season, but BestBuy, Costco and Amazon have already been selling MacBook Air at $950 for M4 Air 13 512GB/16GB variant, when Apple continues to sell at $1,200 with $250 GC.
You can use your Discover points at Amazon and several other places.
That was always the case, but if you're going the trade in route. Direct apple gives the most value (not all the time, but it works out when they do).
Did it for the 17 Pro Max on launch.
trade in 15 PM for $470
Paid the remainder of the 719 with my apple balance which was accumulated from the target/Best buy Get $15 gift card with purchase of $100 apple card. 8 of those would be $120 in alternate store credits.
End up being $600 and tax for my iphone when all said and done. Works out when you want launch day stuff.
But the new oldstock. There is better opportunities.
The Airpods pro 3 is something to look at. $249. Get $50 gift card. Spend $211.65 worth of discover points (without tax of course). Would be more in the $161 range and $50 currency. Around the paypal deal.

I was responding to someone asking to buy a MacBook. Given the discounts available through retailers, getting it at MSRP with a gift card at Apple just to use the Discover points was not a good option.

Correct. My comment was more towards finding a deal on launch day stuff. The discover deal can just sit in the apple balance until they want something right at release.
New to Apple and gift cards.... We need to eventually buy a Macbook for school. I have ~$600 in my Discover cashback balance. Can I buy ~$600 worth of $25 Apple ecertificates, and then use all of those ecertificates to cover part of the Macbook purchase? Will Apple allow this payment online or do I have to perform this in-store? Or, is it better to just buy the Macbook via Costco?
It ends up being a wash. I did this in the past with iPads and MacBooks but you're saving maybe 5% vs just getting the cheapest sale as Apple Store discounts are not nearly as good. Plus the money is held hostage while you find that right timing.
One thing to be aware of with Apple gift cards that I had never run into before. There is a $2,000 limit of what you can have outstanding.
I purchased $3,000 worth of Apple gift cards from Target. I needed to buy four iPhones for my kids. I planned on putting $900 of gift cards into my account. Buy a phone. Then add another $800 and buy a phone, etc.
I Ordered the first two which was about $1650 with taxes. They are to ship in about a week.
This is where I ran into the problem. I could only add $300 more of gift cards and then it indicated no more. That you can only have $2,000 outstanding. Since the two iPhone had not shipped I could not add the gift cards.
I am a little bit on a time crunch as the iPhones are Christmas presents. So if they do not ship soon I will have to use my Wife's Apple account for the next two and a bit screwed on the $300 I have still in my Apple account. I can't find a way to move the $300 to her account.
Since we buy a lot of stuff from Apple it is not a huge issue. I will eventually use. But I have never seen this limitation listed anywhere.

u can try go to the store, buy something for that $300 (say airpod), then return it and get a physical gift card and then add it to other apple account. its a hassle, however it is a workaround to move the balance, may be that might work for u

What's the current best value/price way to buy a new, unlocked iPhone 17 Pro without signing up for new cell service? Is there any reason to buy from Costco vs direct. from Apple?
I don't think I have a trade-in (believe we have an iPhone 11 that might have a cracked screen so I assume it's not worth much).
I've checked and don't think we have the PayPal 20% off deal.
Would this Discover cash back deal likely be the best option?

Yes, you can absolutely do this. You buy the Apple gift cards, and then you redeem them to your Apple Account, where they remain as a balance to be used at apple.com. When their back-to-school promo comes around, you then buy your MacBook with that balance, taking advantage of the Education store discount ($100+ on MacBooks) and whatever free Airpods/Gift card promo they're doing. (Max balance you can carry at apple is I think $2k)
This fall, I bought the base-level MacBook, paid $50 extra to upgrade from AirPods 4, and got a MacBook and AirPods Pro for $950 (plus taxes, of course). Since I'd gotten the gift cards at a 20% discount (Citi ThankYou Points on Cyber Monday), that's like getting a MacBook and AirPods pro combo for $760.
I just logged on to my discover credit card rewards portal. Currently they have until 12/31/25 or till they run out of them- APPLE GIFT CARDS FOR 15% off. This offer was also available few months back until 09/30/25 but they ran out of the gift cards very early. Time to stock up 15% off Apple Card's if you are sitting on tons of rewards cash on discover credit card. Max gift card amount you can buying using your cash rewards is $200 but you can double up and buy 2 or 3 - depending on how much cash rewards you are sitting on. Enjoy!
