OK, so 1/4in drive or 3/8in drive? Or is it just one of those preference type things?

3/8 is stronger. Usually you'll be using 1/4 for lower torque and smaller applications. If you can have only one, get 3/8. But they are cheap enough that you could have both. 3/8 to 1/4 adapters exist so you can have a good 3/8 ratchet and use it with 1/4 bit and socket sets.
