AI FTW:

Pros and Cons
MagellanTV:
Pros: All 4K, deep niche topics, weekly curated adds, smooth apps (iOS/Android/Roku/Smart TVs).
Cons: Smaller library, some "made-for-TV" quality, 75-year limit (fine print).
Curiosity Stream:
Pros: Larger/more polished library, exclusives, public company stability, multi-device ease.
Cons: HD-only in base lifetime (no 4K), occasional billing hiccups.
Both: No ads, offline mobile downloads, global access (some geo-restrictions).
Is It Worth $100?
Yes—for documentary fans who'll watch regularly. At $100–$150, it's cheaper than 2–3 years of Netflix ($276+) but with brainier content. Curiosity Stream is the safer bet for most (bigger, growing library; PCMag pick).61a9e7 MagellanTV suits history/science diehards wanting 4K value. Risks: Service shutdown (rare, but "lifetime" ≠ eternal) or content churn. Start with trials; if you binge 5+ docs/year, grab it. For casuals, stick to annuals or free options like YouTube/PBS.

I'm often sus of anything lifetime... it's usually a losing business model for the seller and they eventually go out of business and you're stuck ....

To play devil's advocate, I wish I had bought a Plex lifetime sub years ago at a cheaper price

I think the difference between plex is that they offer monthly subs too, so it offsets the lifetime subs. Does anyone know if either of these services offer other subs that could help this option stay viable?

They both offer monthly and/or annual subscriptions. Neither seem to offer/market lifetime on their own sites.

Lifetime is never great. The company either goes out of business, or they create new features not included in your lifetime subscription to get you to pay more money. In the long run it's a losing proposition, so they find ways to milk you further (if they don't go under).

Never heard of this service but seems intriguing. If looking at it like paying for x years instead of for a whole lifetime then the investment may make more sense with more realistic/lower expectations. For example, if the company is likely to last for at least 5 years then can think of it like paying 98/5=$19.60 per year for 5 years of interesting high quality content without ads. If the company lasts longer then all the better but it may be worth it even if the company eventually goes under in 10 years or whenever it may happen, it can be hard to predict since companies can at least in theory adapt to the market and stay profitable long term even with a lifetime tier. For example they can at any point stop offering lifetime tier to new accounts (only keep existing lifetime members grandfathered) then all new customers must pay monthly or yearly, helping the company stay afloat. That's just one example of adapting and staying profitable, there are of course many other ways as well.

I'm super suspicious of anything lifetime from Stacksocial. I got a lifetime sub to e-learning content for IT and then the provider changed all the content to web dev and AI crap, so I had to fight for months to get a refund.
