Perhaps put a masking tap down and this over the masking tape?

Why would you ever need to remove it?

Wouldn't that make the stickiness only as strong as the masking tape adhesion itself (which isn't meant to be strong)?

I use 3M velcro strips for a lot of things. This might also be a good use for them here.

I just use a small bumper, much smaller and can barely notice but works the same.

Great ! , Annoyingly I missed the original deal, but as folks said apply the coupon still made it a deal. I have a hole in the wall where a doorknob went into the door. The wall is a special pattern paint job, so this will cover the hole without patching needed as couldn't sand and paint the patch.

Have another door, where I'm using a small box as a block, to avoid another hole, so now can make it look nicer !

Typical seasonal sale trickery - increased the price from $8 to $12 and then giving a 50% discount

If you put new paint anyway, why do you care if it rip the old paint?Isn't it better to keep it on the wall when you renting it? So that the renter doesn't damage the wall?
