Part of the appeal is how nice looking and feeling the pieces are. It's quite satisfying to drop the pieces into the columns.
You draw a challenge card (like complete 1 vertical column) and get points for being the 1st, 2nd etc to complete the challenge as well as bonus points for matching pieces with markings on your board.
It adds to the replay ability of the game.
