I wouldn't say never. Used hard drives could be acceptable if purchased with acceptable warranty and used with appropriate redundancy. If you went into the deal with the expectation of breakage and data loss, and controlled for both, you should be okay.

I wouldn't rely on the SMART numbers if they looked fine. I'd only believe them if they were not fine.
