PROs for RZ50
  • includes base DL RC license

PROs for 3800
  • has 4 discrete SW outputs
  • compatible all the way up the Dirac tech tree to ART (BF sale this week makes it most affordable for the year)
  • can offload channels to amps and save remaining amp power for other connections (RZ50 has no power savings)
  • does not limit power on a low resistance load (see ASR review for the RZ50)

I thought there might be more votes on this by now. I am on the fence but ready to go with Onkyo.

Is it likely that the RZ50 could drop further? This seems to be on the low end for this and includes Dirac Live Full Bandwidth. The X3800H has better hardware but becomes a lot more expensive with the DIRAC upgrades.

The only worry I have is the reliability concerns of Onkyo HT Receivers, and knowing that the RZ50 is older hardware. In some ways the RZ30 looks more attractive to get the newer HDMI board. The RZ30 also seems to have independent subwoofer outputs which is nice if I want to add a second to match my SVS SB-2000.

Any advice from the group?

I think folks are upset that the prices keep going up for these PAC units with no new tech to show for it (i.e. Dirac ART). Getting all the Dirac licenses on a D&M product this week is a good 30+% off from everyday individual prices!

The PAC group did a great job introducing Dirac to the masses but I think most would admit that Denon/Marantz are creating quite a bit of churn lately!

thanks @shaddai. I agree. Although I think X3800H + BC bundle (~500 with BF code) will be tough to justify vs a <800$ RZ30 so I am leaning towards the RZ30 unless some interesting surprise shows up tomorrow.

You have to buy what's right for your situation. If you don't anticipate using more than 2 SWs, then the RZ30 is probably right for you. Just make sure to take advantage of getting DLBC this week before the Dirac sale ends!

From having experience with all those units mentioned, A1EVO & all 3 Dirac RCs.

Performance wise, in short, the only real reason to go with the RZ50 or the 3800 over the RZ30 is if you need 11 channels.

The vast majority of Dirac owners(especially in here) don't find much benefit with DLBC.
Look how popular the RZ50 was/has been for almost 5 years & only got access to DLBC last year.

ART is pretty incredible BUT you have the optimal setup to make it worth it ime.
Remember you have to buy a 3800/Cinema 50 + 3 licenses at $640 + $100 mic to get/use ART!

One important feature left out was Denon/Marantz has access to A1EVO.
It cost nothing & gives you basically the same performance as DL & DLBC, it's a game changer ime!

FYI to get the Dirac that's included in these PAC units is just DL which is $280 right now.

The RZ30 for $750 is hard to beat IF you don't need 11 channels and after Dirac imo.
