Pretty slow with my QNAP NAS... Using it for backup drives for my NAS and nothing more ... Don't expect NAS like performance

Any experience using it like a DAS / directly to a computer?

In for a third unit of these. Bought the first one in 2019 , second in 2023 and now expanding again. Only issue I've had is one of the bays on one of them is somewhat loose which causes loud noises when the HDD within it spins up but pushing against it calms it down. Otherwise I recommend not using the latest firmware on these as the sleep rules are pretty aggressive compared to previous firmware so if you need occasional access to HDDs on the DAS you'll have to wait the 30 seconds it takes for the drives to spin up. No issues with speed, on a 2.5Gb Ethernet connection to the controlling QNAP NAS where the DAS are connected I'm able to fully saturate the write speeds.
They're cheap plastic but I have 6 years of good experience with them and shucked red drives.

I have 3 of these and they are really good. I recommend using the raid 5 hardware raid. If the drive ever failed, you can replace it and it will repair itself without requiring a PC.

Thanks for the info. Repped.

I have a QNAP TS-464 in RAID 5. I was thinking about building out a second NAS but just attached to a local machine for video editing. Figured at that point, a DAS would work. The comments above about it being slow when chained to a NAS made me nervous.

If they offer used at 30% off again, I'll jump. Otherwise, I might just hang onto one of the 464s I got for ~$300 (even though I might not need all of the extra bells and whistles right away).
