FWIW, Rtings has gone through many updates to their testing methods over the last 7 years and are much more strict with their ratings nowadays. This Sony Bravia 8 series was @ 8.8 until Rtings updated it to their latest methodology (v2.0.1) back in May 2025.

It is not top of the line. You are thinking of the XR8ii which has the QD OLED panel. It can be confusing. This is their entry level OLED, hence the lower price.

I want to jump on this but the brightness issue is hard to overlook. If you look at the Rtings review, it looks quite dim even in the dark. That sucks.

To give perspective, my LG oled from maybe 7 years ago, has an 8.5 on ratings, and it is a great TV, but this new OLED has a rating of 7.9 that should give you pause. You are much better off with a mini led from Hisense or TCL at this price, imo.

rtings changed the methodology several times in 7 years so you cant compare scores that way. Scores are lower now.

This is the Bravia 8B which has not been tested. Should be similar to the Bravia 8 but who knows without testing. Furthermore the Bravia 8 is not dim in a dark room but yeah it is a little dim under the bright Costco lights when compared to the other OLEDs and LCDs. Having seen Sony OLEDs in light controlled rooms though they look great. Depends on the use case.

You know what, the poster made a mistake, this is an XR8B which is Sony's top of the line, which changes the matter.

Thanks and yeah the model numbers are a little out of hand so I appreciate the clarification. The last one I got was a 55 inch K series but it looks like they changed up the naming scheme again in the past few years

Wait for miniled rbg that will come out in 2026. Oled is a dead tv technology and will get replaced by miniled rbg.

I wish I got this over the 77" LG C5. I really miss the quality of Sony's Surface audio tech compared to LG's POS internal speakers.

This is NOT the top of the line model.
That would be the Bravia 8 II.
This is the Bravia 8.

Ah, yes, brightness, the only thing you need in a TV.

From Rtings, comparing two Sony Oleds. I just grabbed some brightness measurements.

My 2022 A80K / This 2024 Bravia 8
SDR Real Scene Peak Brightness 302cd/m² / 440cd/m²
SDR Peak 2% Window 456 cd/m² / 459 cd/m²
HDR Peak 2% Window 708 cd/m² / 923 cd/m²
HDR Sustained 2% Window 688 cd/m² / 906 cd/m²

In a dark room this A80K hurts my eyes in a bright HDR scene. I do not have sun hitting the panel but when it's bright out I don't have an issue watching. TVs get brighter every year and I find the idea that they're not bright enough really silly.
