For me personally, the appeal is that I play it on mobile and can just pick it up and play with almost no startup time. No save game to load, no remembering what I was doing when I left off last time. No story to keep track of. Yet there is wayyyy more substance there than your typical vapid mobile game.
I could see that if you aren't really into card games that the game might not be all that it is cracked up to be. But it is probably one of the best card games to come out in a long time.
Unlike poker, where a bad deal affects one hand (<5 minutes), in Balatro, if the deal is bad, you may have spent 40 minutes on a totally lost cause. The point requirements to advance are exponential, so there is no mercy.
I saw that the only way to continue to advance would be to start games and quickly abandon bad deals, which takes most of the fun out of it.
Still a fun game - not sure if worth $20 for the limited lifespan.
