i hate to say im completely sold on garmin (have a fenix 6x) but even the slickdeals don't make the price palatable. seems crazy to pay so much to have "less" than a normal smartwatch.

I think the value proposition is how often you need to charge the watch for what it can do compared to a smart watch which can do a lot (usually reliant on having a smartphone nearby) but you have to recharge it just about every night.

Exactly. I had an Apple watch for years but replaced it for a Fenix 6X 4 years ago. The weeks of battery life and ruggedness of the Garmin watches just set them apart.

How is the Fenix 8 less than a normal smartwatch? Its functions aren't the same, but it's far better for its specialized purposes.

I don't know, I don't own one. I like that my f6x is not just a mini phone on my wrist. I use it for workouts and I only get a few different notifications. the only app I have installed is Spotify so I can listen to music on runs without my phone. my comment was intended to be complimentary.

I have a Garmin 955 Forerunner I'm looking to replace and have started to look at other brands like Coros and Suunto recently. I did previously have a Suunto prior and their previous app was horrible but their newer app seems to be much better from what I've read. I think the biggest driver for me to look elsewhere is the higher prices of the watches and some features going behind their subscription instead of rolling out as feature enhancements. The writing is the on the wall in my mind that you'll start to see more and more go behind the paywall.
