I've bought western digital drives for my synology for years now but man, their prices have really diverged from the deals I see on seagates lately. Just got this email a few minutes after I got a Seagate 24tb for $250 email lol

Is this even worth it? Seagate is half the price. I get that it is "RED", but that is just advertisement.

I bought a 28TB drive for like $290 six months ago.

$580 for two 16's is a bad deal.

A 28TB what? Enterprise pull? Internal shuck? ...or a new drive with warranty, like these?

I thought 24TB is standard for nowadays home labs? Is that a miss? At least I thought that/use it with 4 bay.

Keep your eyes peeled on eBay. I somehow managed to snag a 24tb WD Gold brand new eBay after talking someone down from an already great $360 to $324. My offer was for shits and giggles, but I never thought they'd actually accept it lol. Deals like that are definitely there if you the have patience to wait and abuse eBay search notifications well enough. I was also grabbing 20TB WD Golds for low $200s last year a lot too, but my needs have been exceeding the 20/22TB drives I've been grabbing over the past year unfortunately.

But that's a seagate barracuda and you are looking for nas drives. Prices naturally aren't going to be the same.

I bought 4 of these 3 years ago around this same time when Western Digital had them on sale for $250 each. I was hoping for a similar sale this year to pick up more, but this is a tad disappointing.
These are CMR drives (not SMR), and they use helium, so they're a tad quieter than "normal air" drives. That said, when I got them, one was noticably louder than the other 3. Ran extended SMART tests on all of them and they all checked out. Still running fine after 3 years, though still within the 5 year warranty period.

$18/TB is not a deal. You are better off buying an external hard drive at $12/TB with a 3 year warranty and removing the clamshell.

Unfortunately prices on storage have just gone insane, and they're only going to get worse for at least 6 months (or more). This isn't a particularly good deal to me, the seagates are a better deal IMO.

This is pathetic. Drive prices have barely changed in 7 years. Especially 8TB, which I was hoping would be the sweet spot for NAS by now, but here we are. No deals. Bundle deals to obfuscate the fact that everything is overpriced and greedy right now.

Can you share where you got Seagate for $250? That sounds a great price and I'd like to buy it as well. Thanks

Looks like there will be a $240 black friday deal https://slickdeals.net/f/18810064-starts-nov-20-24tb-seagate-barracuda-3-5-7200-rpm-512mb-cache-cmr-internal-sata-hard-drive-239-99-free-shipping?sort=oldest&page=2#commentsHeader
But it does seem people really don't like the barracudas for NAS systems. I haven't really expanded my arrays much in the last couple years so I haven't been paying much attention though. Looks like maybe there has just been a big divergence in price on "nas" drives compared to other hard drives. But none of these are SMR so I'm not sure how big a deal it really is for low volume home use NAS systems.
