I've been using this for years.

Pro-Tip (since its left off most recipes):

You want to buy Iota Carrageenan and guar gum powder. Makes the ice cream smooth and soft without completely overloading it with fats.

I use no more than a 1/4 teaspoon of guar gum (probably more like 1/8), and no more than 3/4 teaspoon Carrageenan per 2 quarts. Mixed with the sugar before adding it.

Too much guar gum, and the ice cream becomes gummy. None, and you're ice cream will be icy. (Unless you use more than 50% cream and yolks... which I find kind of gross and heavy)

Paid 80+ several years ago for this same unit. My wife has used it dozens of times and it has been reliable and made some great ice cream. It was the best reviewed ice cream maker under the 200ish range when I researched it back then.

I used an AMEX offer of 15% and it's a pretty good deal for me. Unfortunately it won't come until next year.

Do you have to put the bowl in the freezer before making ice cream (or whatever)? Or does this do the freezing for you?

You do have to keep the bowl frozen prior to use. We have one and love it, easy and delicious ice cream.

Yes, you have to put it in a plastic bag to avoid freezer burns and in the freezer for atleast 6hrs

Ice cream makers with a built-in compressor (what makes a refrigerator/freezer/air conditioner cold) can be had for down to $100-140.

The $100 ones say 90 mins, while the $140 says 30 mins. But that's for the first batch, if you do multiple ones afterward will be much quicker.

You also aren't limited to just ice cream, gelatos, frozen yogurt, milkshakes from scratch, or frozen non-iced down margaritas can all be made as well.

Any one that doesn't need to be frozen is generally over $200. My wife has one similar to this and likes it but doesn't like the inconvenience of have to freeze so will eventually get one that doesn't need to be frozen previously.
